Cover Reveal and Giveaways: The Dragon Carnivale By Heidi Garrett

Why Do I Write Fantasy? or: You Never Know Who Might Show Up at Your Front Door
By Heidi Garrett

As long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with the truths that my physical senses cannot explain: the mystical things occurring on this planet. Writing fantastical stories is my testament to these other layers of reality.

There are many ways of looking at our world. Imagine sitting at home, perhaps in your living room. There’s a knock on the door. When you open it, a funny little woman is standing there. She is about half your height, and a plaid crimson kerchief—knotted under her hooked chin—covers her head. Her dress is sack-like over her square body. She’s wearing an apron that could use a good ironing and she’s carrying a battered brown suitcase that’s almost as big as she is.

“As long as you’re staring, a glass of water would be nice,” she says.

Despite her gruff manner, you sense something mysterious about this stranger, and to be honest, you’re dying to know more about her. When she crosses the threshold of your home, a strong wind slams the door behind her. You both jump. There hasn’t been a breeze all day. In fact, it’s sweltering and heat waves have been rising from the melting pavement for weeks.

When you offer it, she almost grabs the glass from your hand, and you can’t stop your staring—even though you know it’s rude—as she drinks in noisy gulps.

“What? You’ve never seen a spring faerie before?” she asks.

Before you can answer, she wipes her mouth with the back of her hand. “Guess not, there aren’t many of us left. And I haven’t been to the Mortal World, since…”
She stops. Her deeply etched face softens. Something like sorrow pools in her dark brown eyes. She waves her hand. “That’s not what I’m here to talk about.”

Your heart tugs. You want to pull her from that sad place. “What’s in your suitcase?”

She points to the table. “I’ll show you.”

The suitcase is filled with eyeglasses. There are so many. Some have square black frames, others have round wire frames; there are a few speckled frames with octagonal lenses. You spy a pair of purple ones.

She shoves a pair of thick black glasses into your hand. “Put these on. Tell me what you see.”

With the eyeglasses settled on the bridge of your nose, you can’t see anything but yourself. You blink. You can see your hands and feet, your legs and toes. But the spring faerie—if that’s really what she is—is just a blur. You pull them off. She trades them for a pair of wire rims. With these glasses you can see her and your home.

“What’s your name?” you ask.

“Flora.”

“Like flowers blooming.”

She nods and looks away with that whiff of sadness.

Again, there is something about her that pulls at your heart. You think of the miracle of spring after a long hard winter, and that she shouldn’t be sad—if she really is a spring faerie.

“But...you don’t have any wings,” you say.

She smoothes the wrinkles in her apron. “Not all faeries do.”

“But—”

She almost jerks the wire-rim spectacles from your nose. You reach for that purple pair. She doesn’t stop you. Now, you can see down the street; your eyes travel the highway. Your view elevates, as if you are a bird. Soon you see the entire city you live in. With each pair of glasses, you see the bigger world.

When Flora tucks the temple arms of a pair of red frames behind your ears, perspective zooms around you. It’s like the lens pulls you into outer space, and you can see the entire world and all the billions of people who live on Earth.

Your heart flutters in your chest; it’s a lot to take in.

“Now—” Flora hands you a pair of fuchsia glasses with tiny rhinestones embedded in the frames. “Try on these.”

When you put them on, you’re able to see beyond the physical entirety of the world into the things that you’ve always known exist, but since you can’t see, touch, smell, or hear them, sometimes you’ve doubted. But you’ll never doubt again, because now—with these special glasses—you can actually see the bonds of love that death can never sever, the strings of fate that wrap the brown paper package of all our lives with twine, the tide of time that alters us, even as we never change...

But most importantly, you’ve seen that you belong here, on this planet. And you know—without a shadow of a doubt—that everything fits. Including you.

“I don’t ever want to take these glasses off,” you say.

Flora is already cramming the rest of them back into her bag. “Then don’t.”
__________

The Queen of the Realm of Faerie is a fairy tale fantasy series that bridges the Mortal and Enchanted worlds. The main character, Melia, is an eighteen-year-old half-faerie, half-mortal. She lives in Illialei, a country in the Enchanted World, with her two sisters and their mother. Melia’s father has been exiled to the Mortal World, and her best friend is a pixie.

When the story opens in the first book, Melia is troubled by her dark moon visions, gossip she overhears about her parents at the local market, and the trauma of living among full-blooded faeries with wings—she doesn’t have any.

As the series unfolds, the historic and mystical forces that shape Melia’s life are revealed. Each step of her journey—to find the place where she belongs—alters her perceptions about herself, deepens her relationships with others, and enlarges her world view.

In The Dragon Carnivale, book 3 of The Queen of the Realm of Faerie, energies in the Enchanted World are shifting and new alliances are forming; the Battle of Dark and Light has begun. Melia is desperate to make things right with Ryder, the young priest from Idonne, but first she must warn the half-bloods in the Mortal World that Umbra is coming for them, and face the powerful Dragonwitch and her spectacular Dragon Carnivale.

The first two books in the series: Nandana’s Mark and The Flower of Isbelline are currently available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, Kobo, and Smashwords. Nandana’s Mark is free.

The Dragon Carnivale is scheduled for a June 18, 2013, release.

Review

The tragic incident at the 711 has shaken Evie to her core.  Learning of the loss of her Uncle was a devastating blow that made what happened that night that much more heartbreaking.  She is not fully functional at the start of this book but can you blame her?  When the last known member of your family has been murdered, you can never fully recover but with the help of Reed, Zeph, and Buns, Evie begins the healing process and just starts to begin to come around when a ski trip turns disastrous.  Evie’s worst fears cause her to flee her new family, dreading that she will put their lives in jeopardy if she remains within close proximity to them.  Accompanied by the only one on this Earth like her, Russell and Evie set out to start a new life in hiding in the hopes that she can keep her loved ones safe.  Unfortunately they are followed by something more powerful and even more deadly than anything they have ever encountered before.  Evie is captured and without the help of Russell, Reed, or her angel friends, she must face an evil worse than her nightmares alone.

There is absolutely no way you are going to see anything coming in this book.  You are blind sighted left and right.  From the moment Evie and Reed step off that ski lift, to the moment Evie is captured, from the determination she musters while dehydrated and dying on her cell floor, you will be gasping in shock and mentally cursing up a storm.  This book also brings a new perspective, Russell’s to be precise.  I will admit, the change came suddenly and frankly, I was a little annoyed.  I had not expected to hear the southern drawl first person experience of Mr. Marx so when the switch was made, I was frustrated.  Thankfully, the annoyance and frustration quickly subsided.  I mastered his accent (in my head, as I read that is) and the switch was made back to Evie.  Looking back, I did appreciate seeing this story from a different point of view!   I especially enjoyed the male perspective that Russell brought to the table not to mention all of those interesting memories of all of those lifetimes spent with Evie were a special added bonus treat, thank you Ms. Bartol btw, because WOW.  That’s all I can say, or write, whatever, just WOW.
That only leaves me with one more topic that I feel like I have to touch on only slightly and only because I don’t want to give away too much…he needs no introduction really…the one, the only, the man you’ll love to hate and hate to love…BRENNUS.  He makes his debut in Intuition and its one hell of a debut.  If you haven’t gotten hooked to The Premonition Series yet, this book and this man will have you hook, line, and sinker.

Textual Encounters (The Christine and Jake Affair, #1)
Author: Morgan Parker
Adult Romance
Tour Host: Lady Amber's Tours

Synopsis

Katie discovers an unlocked iPhone in the back seat of a taxi. But instead of turning it in to the driver as lost, she decides to keep it for herself. Outside of the usual clutter you would expect to find on a smartphone, what captures Katie's interest is the single conversation she finds on the phone's secure text messaging service, a three-month dialogue between a woman with an uncertain past named Christine and a single, eligible man named Jake. What starts out as a message intended for someone else ends up being the beginning of a relationship more powerful than anything Christine or Jake have ever experienced.

Excerpt

For a brief moment in time while sitting in the cab, the stars align. I realize just how rare these moments are and decide to take advantage of it. I make a quick, mental shopping list of all of those other big things my parents never gave me – the Spring Break trip to Miami Beach for my senior year in high school, the congratulatory BMW for getting accepted to Columbia, the hot boyfriend who was supposed to propose after fourth year and help me avoid the hectic life that typically follows med school. Okay, maybe I couldn’t blame my parents for not getting me that last item, but if the Universe could deliver an iPhone, it sure as hell can find me a husband.

With my wish list ready and the iPhone in my lap, I close my eyes and channel all my energy, every last ounce of it, at the Universe. And that’s when it happens. The phone actually starts vibrating. My eyes shoot open and I look down in shock.

Courted #2
4 out of 5 Stars
Caged #3
3 out of 5 Stars
Author: Marian Tee
Romance, Erotic
Adult Book

Courted Synopsis:

My name is Yanna Everleigh. I used to think playing hard to get would be enough to keep gorgeous, sexy billionaires away - well, at least the kind who didn't do love at least. But I was wrong. If anything, it just made my billionaire get even, leaving us both brokenhearted.

His name is Constantijin Kastein. He blows hot and cold, acting like he doesn't know the meaning of romance but then he sweeps me off my feet with the adorable little things he does. He makes me want to be his, even though he seems to want other women, too. But he's also Netherlands' #1 playboy and I'm the only virgin he hasn't been able to bed. I have to be sure he doesn't just see me as a challenge.

Maybe if I ask him to court me - maybe if I pretend other men are also courting me - pretend that I'm like him and I can want other men, too - maybe he'll finally stop trying to seduce me.

Or not.

Caged Synopsis:

My name is Yanna Everleigh. I used to think asking for a courtship would be enough to keep gorgeous, sexy billionaires away - well, at least the kind who didn't do love at least. But I was wrong. If anything, it only made my billionaire realize I can hurt him, too, and now we're apart.

His name is Constantijin Kastein. He blows hot and cold, wanting me by his side all the time but never hesitating to walk away when I get too close to his heart. He makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time, wondering if the next best thing to love should be good enough for me. But he's also Netherlands' #1 playboy and I'm that one woman he's asked to moved in with him. I need to show him he doesn't need a cage to keep me his.

Maybe if I tell him first that I love him - maybe if I pretend that I don't see the coldness in his eyes when we talk about that word - pretend that I don't feel him putting distance between us when I ask for something he's not yet ready to give - maybe he'll finally realize that he doesn't have to seduce a woman who loves him. He just has to love her back.

Or not.

My Review:

Marian has come up with the cutest idea for these stories. How Not To Be Seduced By Billionaires as a whole was entertaining and enjoyable, definitely worth the price. They are shorter stories but Marian makes it work because she gets everything you need within these pages. Courted begins off right after book 1, Chased, with Yanna back from her Vegas trip. This book is about the aftermath of Yanna's demand of Constantijin to enter into a relationship with her.  I enjoyed this book because it was a great middle book giving you the growth of their relationship. Caged was the 3rd book ending the series which I didn't enjoy as much as the first two. Although Yanna had some great moments that made me laugh and cheer out loud for her, you get to see a tougher side of her for moments, but as a whole, Yanna crying the entire time left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. This book was the most emotional of the three, which makes sense why she crys so much but it was more depressing than anything. Yanna as a character has the most growth from the books, Constantijin I don't believe necessarily grows as a character but just gives in to what Yanna wants. You get to see how and why Constantijin is who he is along with some family background.  I would have liked to see more change from him, but you can't take away a tiger's stripes. All in all I enjoyed the series and would recommend it to my followers and friends. Marian did a great job of adding lust, laughter and that moment where you just smile and sigh when it all comes to an end. Enjoy!
