Review: Assassin's Rose By Kasonndra Leigh

Having not read anything by Ms. Leigh before, I did enjoy her story telling and her writing style. Not having any background information about the story or even the characters, it still read well enough for me to follow. The deception and heartbreak were tough to bear even within only 44 pages. You can't but help empathize with Desi. I love strong female characters, and Desi was just that. To avenge her parents, the trials and broken relationships she endures shows true strength. I might just have to go back and read the first two that started the series. Enjoy.

Review: Tied By Laney McMann

Spoilers!

Tied is centered around two souls that collided when they were merely children. Layla and Max spent their days running through the forest and jumping down waterfalls together. They grew up laughing, playing, and exploring in the Otherworld. Neither of them had a care in that world or this one...until Max is forbidden to see Layla and Layla is left crushed. This devastating event causes Layla to be left forever haunted by the memories of Max and the Otherworld.

Presently we are introduced to teenaged Layla and find a shell of the former girl who once raced on the cliff side in the Otherworld. She is an insomniac, driven mad with what she thinks are hallucinations. Layla can't shake the feeling that she is forgetting much of her childhood and the memories of her best friend Max are torturing her dreams. Her only happiness comes when she is dancing. Even Layla's best friend and fellow dancer, Benny, has a hard time getting Layla motivated to have a girls night out or to even shower for that matter. Layla's lack of sleep leave her exhausted and eventually wind her up in the hospital, convinced she is loosing her mind.

Fast-forward a bit more and Max is back in the picture.  We find out that his tie to Layla has overcome his need to stay away from her. They naturally become inseparable once again, despite Layla's mothers warning that Max will only bring danger to Layla's doorstep. Shortly after their reunion, Layla is indeed in danger and is attacked on multiple occasions. Without much explanation, Max convinces Layla that he will give her the answers to who and what she is and what their destiny has in store for them. You get to about 40% without knowing what the Hell is going on, something that I find extremely frustrating. Things pick up quite a bit after that but personally, I would have liked more information from page one. I couldn't wrap my head around Layla's mindset. She was so persistent about more knowledge one moment and seemed to just go with the flow the next. If I was being attacked and my BFF knew something about the attacker/s, I would be relentlessly persistent about finding out what they knew. Right?! Okay rant over.

SO, half way through Tied you will become more enticed with the storyline and will want to stick it out, it's just a matter of getting to that point. In saying all if that, I do have to give Laney McMann MAJOR kudos. As much as I wish I could change some things about Tied, I truly believe that is has great potential. The story is unique and has an element of CONSTANT surprise. It is mysterious and the twists and turns will leave you wanting more without giving you whiplash. Her descriptive writing is filled with visual words and impressive detail. I am fully engaged in a scene when she gives us the description but that isn't as consistent as it should be. For example, I can imagine my self driving in the car with Laney or pulling up to Max's home but I haven't a clue what Benny looks like.

Putting my comments aside, I still highly recommend this book and series for that matter. I believe Laney McMann has a way with words and we can expect great things from her in the future!

The Keeper: Awakening By O. L. Ramos

I always enjoy a book with a good love triangle.  And this book introduces us to a staggering.  Elizabeth McBeth, (a name that at first stuck out to me like a sore thumb, but I have to say, as I read the book, I really began to like it and how it was tied to important tidbits throughout the book, but I can’t say more, don’t want to give away any spoilers) is a nineteen year old genius in small town that thinks she is crazy.  A nineteen year old working on her Master’s degree is a little nutty, but really they are focusing on the fact that when Elizabeth was a young girl, she witnessed her mother being abducted by something, rather than someone.  Her life revolves around finding the answer to what might have taken her mother from her and in this quest for an answer, she meets Michael.  Michael is the strong silent type and Elizabeth can’t put her finger on why she feels at ease with him.  Then enters Vincent, a complete foil of Michael, who further confuses Elizabeth as to why she is feeling such strong feelings for someone she barely went on two dates with and now has an attraction to someone she clearly thinks is a snob.  I really enjoy how the author weaves these characters into a complicated blanket of romance, trust, and mystical knowledge.  The author does a wonderful job of making it exceedingly difficult for the reader to root strongly for either guy, because truly, they both sound exceedingly sexy and like great companions.  This book offers a new twist on age-old lore, which I found incredibly refreshing and delightfully unpredictable.  I even enjoyed the pace of how the plot progressed in this book, which I will admit seemed rather fast.  Maybe, I just really enjoyed reading it, and I couldn’t put it down.  Either way, I recommend this book as a great read!
