Just the way I liked it. That’s what twenty-three years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you — a completely skewed sense of reality. Breathe For Me

5 out of 5 Stars

Xander Lawson exudes easy charm. He likes a woman unafraid to match his appetite for unfettered fun. He doesn’t do complicated or emotional. But the raw need emanating from fragile Chelsea compels him closer. He can’t resist spinning a sensual fantasy world around them.
As passion spills outside their carefully selected boundaries, Xander learns Chelsea’s stronger than he first thought. But is she strong enough to handle the intensity he’s always kept hidden?

My Review:

Natalie Anderson has just gotten herself another fan. This story was such an emotional and uplifting story about two people overcoming traumatic pasts. Finding a love story about two people, a true love story not filled with sabotage, deceit, or characters doing really stupid things to hurt each other are hard to find. This story is what you want to read. Two people finding each other, going through the motions, with a believable outcome. The thing I loved most about it was that it was believable. Reading this story will make you realize that in any situation or event that happens to you in your life, you are able to overcome it and move forward. Of course the love scenes between the characters are not to be overlooked because they are good and only add to the story, but all in all there is a message in the end. Superheroes really do exist. I hope you enjoy it!

EXCERPT:
I froze, too afraid to move. The steps began to get louder as each second passed. My heart was pounding to its own quick rhythm. A hand grasped my shoulder and I squeezed my eyes shut expecting the worse. I began to quiver uncontrollably, wanting to scream, to run as hard as I could, but my feet were frozen. I could only stand there as my tears mixed with the rain pouring over me.

The grip was released, and suddenly an arm snaked around my back turning me in the opposite direction. I couldn’t muster up the courage to look at the person helping me. I could only assume it wasn’t Aaron. Whoever it was had too gentle of a touch. Yet instead of feeling relief a sense of nausea washed over me. Granted, I was momentarily safe, but the emotions coursing through me had made it—for a brief moment—feel like it was happening all over again.

I didn’t want to be vulnerable in front of anyone who could take advantage of me. With my heart going 100 miles per hour in my chest, I tried to push away from the person and nothing happened. They didn’t budge and their grip around me was too strong. After many deep breaths, I got the courage to glance up into eyes the color of emeralds—eyes filled with concern. My legs gave out and I sagged in his arms. Steve didn’t hesitate. He slowly lowered me to the wet asphalt and sat there while I sobbed into his already wet shirt.

Sirens and love potions, witches and elves, and Valentine kisses. Nothing will be the same for me again.

My Review:

Spoilers, that give next to nothing away and do not reveal any major plot lines or the outcome, have been included in this review.

This story, while it may be short, is filled to the brim with an incredible amount of imagination.  I really enjoyed how the author introduced me to all of her characters.   I genuinely appreciated all of the humans and the magical creatures, even after just a brief encounter.  She made every scene come to life in an exciting way that was very refreshing.  I had honestly judged this book by its beautiful cover and was pleasantly surprised to find that this light read was more than just the typical paranormal novella.  For someone like myself, who has been reading a LOT of dark and emotionally traumatic paranormal books as of late, Playing Hooky was a fun-loving bookcation that I would recommend to anyone looking to take break at work or from studying.  At just over 100 pages and at .99, it is a cost effective bookcation you can enjoy in as little as an hour (if you’re a fast reader…I think it took me an hour and a half).
I could easily see Playing Hooky go from being a short story to being expanded and made into a novel HOWEVER; I am not opposed to the idea of a short story series.  The (Paranormal Investigations) portion next to the title leads me to believe that is exactly what the author intends to do and I hope that she does.  After reading Playing Hooky there are so many questions that I would like answers to mainly, what IS Jason really?  Also, how will Jason and Emma repay their favor debts to both the spry witch and the deadly hunter?  I am dying to know what color Emma’s hair will turn into next when the young elfin wizard tries to “fix it” again ;).  My only suggestion for the *fingers crossed* stories to come would a thorough spell check.

Bonus: One of my favorite quotes is when the spry witch responds to a question with, “You stink of unicorns.” Her snarky attitude won me over.  I could read a short story just about that old hag!
