Book Review: Supernova By Jessica Marting

Supernova
Supernova (The Commons)
Author: Jessica Marting
Genre: Adult Sci-Fiction Romance
5 out of 5 Stars

Synopsis:

All Lily wants is a fresh start. A desk job in a cryonics lab, miles from home, seems like the perfect way to begin her new life. She just doesn’t expect her employers to be a pair of power-hungry psychopaths from the far future who won’t let anyone stand in their way, including their quiet receptionist.

Hauling a pile of museum artifacts in a dilapidated patrol ship, the worst things Captain Rian Marska expects to deal with are bickering crew members and a long, lonely trip across the galaxy. An Earth exhibit coming to life and claiming to be from the year 2017 is not something he imagined possible. Nor is he able to admit the feelings she stirs up in him.

When Rian’s superiors sweep Lily under the rug, they take it upon themselves to find out why she was taken from her own time and what her kidnappers want. What they discover has implications not only for them, but for the entire civilized universe.

My Review:

I was so impressed with this book and I’m actually surprised that it hasn’t gotten higher ratings. As a new reader to the Sci-Fi genre, I am relatively picky what I choose to read. This book had just the right amount of everything for me to enjoy. The "technical speech" when it came to futuristic stuff did not confuse or overwhelm me to the point that I couldn’t comprehend it, the characters were entertaining and intriguing, the romance was not overly or under done and the intimacy was not too erotic but sensual. The action and suspense was great. It literally had my heart beating at the end. Most of the action took place towards the second half of the book but the beginning held great suspense and mystery that kept you going until the action began. I am so impressed with the writing from this author and I hope she continues with another book. Enjoy!

Review Post: Predestined By Abbi Glines

Predestined (Existence Trilogy, #2)
Predestined (Existence Trilogy #2)
Author: Abbi Glines
Mature YA 17+
Paranormal Romance/Suspense
5 out of 5 Stars

Synopsis

You would think after helping save her boyfriend from an eternity in Hell that things would go back to normal. Well, as normal as life can be when you can see souls and your boyfriend is Death. But for Pagan Moore, things are just getting weirder.

The high school quarterback and reigning heartthrob, Leif Montgomery, is missing. While the town is in a frenzy of worry, Pagan is a nervous wreck for other reasons. Apparently good ‘ol Leif isn’t your average teenage boy. He isn’t even human. According to Death, Leif doesn’t have a soul. The quarterback may have skipped town but he’s still showing up in Pagan’s dreams... uninvited.

Dank has known from the beginning Leif wasn’t human. But he hadn’t worried about a simple soulless creature. Now, he realizes he made a grave mistake. Pagan’s soul has been marked since birth as a restitution, to a spirit so dark not even Death walks near it. Dank knows saving Pagan’s soul won’t be easy but Pagan is his. And he’s already proven he’ll defy Heaven to keep her. If Hell wants a piece of him too, then bring it on.

My Review

Holy Cow I loved this book!  There was so much unknown that every page made it harder and harder to put down.  I loved how Dank and Pagan's relationship moved on. I liked that Leif turned out to be not such a good guy, I mean come on, no one is that good. In Existence, we never saw Dank's true ability and how powerful he really is. In Predestined, he showed that and more. Not only is he a bad-ass, but loyal, possessive, and tender. Pagan really surprised me in this book. Previously I was ready to pull my hair out because of how emotional she was, and crying a lot. This time, she was so much stronger, more sure of herself and her relationship with Dank, and she was smarter. The action and suspense happened in parts throughout the book, not at the very end which can leave readers unimpressed with the story. Let me tell you, there was no lacking in any department in this book. I like Abbi's writing style with writing story that is enjoyable for older YA readers and adults. Her characters represent reality, not the fictional version that makes no sense and do the stupidest things no ordinary person would do. I think the greatest thing you can take away from this book is seeing the sacrifices each character is willing to take, from Pagan's mother, to Dank, to Leif, and to Pagan. Although each sacrifice was different and done for different reasons, in the end it's the price you will pay that matters the most.

 Excerpt

He was still waiting when I joined him again, composed. He stood with his back against the wall, his hands lost deep into the folds of his pockets. He was studying his shoes, his hair falling in thick fringes over his eyes. Those blue eyes rose, crystalline pools of electricity, and met mine, and my world stopped. My breath stopped. My heart would have stopped if it wasn’t drumming a tempo of pure elation at the sight of him. It ached, so desperate for the need to be closer. God, it was never close enough. I could crawl into him, burrow into his soul and it wouldn’t be enough.
I took a step closer, as unsteady as a new born calf. He caught my hand, reeled me to him without ever pushing away from the wall. I was pulled into the space between his feet, held there as he bent my arm and twisted it around my own waist. I was pressed into him, his thighs hard against mine. I felt his heartbeat through the fingertips he traced over the curve of my cheek.
“Stop touching me,” I gasped, cotton-mouthed, half-crazed by the possibility that he might take me seriously.
“Why?” His breath fanned over my dry and already parted lips.
I opened my eyes, surprised to find them closed. “Because I won’t want you to stop.”
The band of steel around my waist tightened until I was supported only by him, by his arm, his chest, his heat, his scent… God, I was home! My fingers curled into the soft material of his fresh, clean shirt. He must have changed, but it was yet another black t-shirt.
“I can’t.” His lips wrote each word against mine in the caress of butterfly wings.
My bones liquefied. I nearly fainted.
“Why?” The single word was a mere movement of my lips.
His free hand shackled my chin, guided my face up, held me prisoner to eyes much too animal to be human. “Because I don’t want to stop.”
If there was ever any possibility of remembering to breathe, it was gone. I was barely conscious, barely even sane as I sunk into blissful madness cured only by his lips… his touch.
“Touch me!” My desperate plea was met with a fierce growl.
His eyes, dark, feral, bore into mine. “Not here!”
I opened my mouth to protest, to beg, but his finger against my lips became a barricade, trapping the words on my tongue.
“Don’t!” he hissed. His finger drew back, traced the curve of my bottom lip. His eyes followed the slow caress the way a cat watches a canary. “I can’t promise I’m completely in control right now.”

Excerpt
You can’t escape, Loti.
She snapped her head up, spluttered and spit as the water filled her nose and mouth. She heard that voice somewhere before, but she couldn’t remember where. “No,” she whimpered.
You are only fooling yourself if you think you can run away.
She squeezed her eyes shut while thinking, this is not real, this is not real.
Oh, but it is, sweet Loti, you are what you are and cannot fight it.
Loti trembled as something thick and hot and paralyzing slithered through the small shower space, her teeth chattering.
This is who you are –you are
“No,” she screamed so hard and so loud her throat seized up, and she dissolved into coughing spasms. The living heat squirmed its way through her chest, up her throat, filling her nose. She clawed at her throat and face. Dizzy, so dizzy.
Don’t faint, don’t faint.
She slipped and fell backwards into the tub. She had one more moment to think, don’t hit your head, and then all was black.

What she doesn't realize is that her appointed time to die is drawing near and the wickedly beautiful soul she is falling in love with is not a soul at all.

He is Death and he's about to break all the rules.

My Review

Wow. What an exciting read. Totally not what I expected. This book is like your worst addiction because you can't stop reading. Abbi has done a fantastic job of keeping the reader engaged in her story. Not having read any synopsis to this book, I began with a clean slate. I was impressed with her ability to keep me intrigued even though the whole fallen angels, heaven and hell is not that appealing to me as a reader. This trilogy has me hooked. Abbi has the ability to write with passion and emotion that transfers to the reader. Many a times I was looking for a Kleenex just in case because it was getting emotional. Keeping up with the trend lately in YA books with the whole love triangle, you cannot help but love both male characters. They each provide something that the main character needs, whether it be support, friendship, love or companionship. Filled with twists and turns in every chapter, this story is one not to miss.

Book Review: Wanderlust By Skye Warren

Wanderlust

Wanderlust
Author: Skye Warren
Adult Book 18+
Dark Erotic/Suspense/Romance
 4 out of 5 Stars

Synopsis:

Can love come from pain?

Evie always dreamed of seeing the world, but her first night at a motel turns into a nightmare. Hunter is a rugged trucker willing to do anything to keep her—including kidnapping. As they cross the country in his rig, Evie plots her escape, but she may find what she's been looking for right beside her.

Wanderlust is a dark erotic novel which explores dubious consent, captivity, and power play. Not intended for those uncomfortable with the subject matter or under eighteen.

My Review:

I am generally new to the genre of dark erotic romance stories. Wanderlust is the 3rd book I’ve read so far and they are growing on me. I am fortunate that of the three I’ve read, they have been 4 or 5 star ratings. Wanderlust is the first story I have read where both characters are so horribly broken from the start and stay that way through the ending. Their journey throughout the book was completely addicting. Whereas the scenes are disturbing, and heart-wrenching, you cannot stop reading because you want to know what will happen next. The characters have such violent and abusive backgrounds that they would be a psychologist’s wet dream. That in itself helps make them intriguing. You want to know why turned out the way they are, you want to know what secret they are hiding, and you want to have hope that they can overcome their obstacles. Wrapping this up, I would not say this is a romance story, for me, this is a dark erotic suspense story. There are no happy endings, no happily ever after, and no riding off together into the sunset. Not to spoil anything but if I wanted a Disney ending then I would go read Cinderella. I liked this because of these reasons; it was dark, raw, disturbing, sad, exciting and suspenseful all in one. For those who enjoy this genre, I would recommend it. For those who are new to this genre, throw all your feelings of right and wrong out the window and enjoy this for what it is, a story.
